Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County celebrated our longest serving volunteer this month by debuting the very first Habitat home built using a new floorplan named in his honor.

Bill Droste has served as a volunteer crew leader helping construct Habitat homes for more than 25 years. Crew leaders are skilled volunteers who come to the build site regularly to guide less experienced volunteers. Over the last quarter century, Droste has spent over 1,000 days – 6,000 hours – helping to build brand new, affordable Habitat homes in Central Florida. “Habitat became a habit,” Droste said.

During the event in Orange County’s Holden Heights neighborhood, we cut the ribbon on the first completed home built with the floorplan named “The Droste” after him. The floorplan will continue to be used for additional affordable homes in Orange and Osceola counties.

“Our homeowners experience the true impact of the time and talent crew leader Bill Droste has poured into supporting our mission in the places they call home every day,” said Catherine Steck McManus, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County. “He has devoted thousands of hours to helping build stable, affordable homes for local families, and we are proud to honor his ongoing dedication and lasting legacy in a permanent way.”

We are always looking for additional volunteer crew leaders to join our team. A Habitat crew leader doesn’t have to have professional experience in building or construction, but familiarity with tools and building materials is strongly preferred. The next virtual Crew Leader Info Session is Thursday, June 25, at 6 p.m. For more information, including how to register, click here.

For those interested in applying to purchase a Habitat home with an affordable mortgage, there are two upcoming Homeownership Program Orientations coming up on June 24 (virtual), July 8 (virtual), and July 24 (in-person). More information is available here.
