We Transform Communities

Habitat Orlando & Osceola produces research to lead the conversation and push for policies that address the root causes of the housing crisis. On this page you will find research products that aim to empower community advocates and policy developers with knowledge and data about housing needs and measuring community progress.

Policy Discovery and Insight Guides

Policy and legislation often have unintended or unexpected outcomes. This is especially true in relation to housing. The housing system is constantly in flux, and it can be difficult to predict how different stakeholders such as developers, homeowners, renters, bankers, etc. will react to changing conditions.

The Cornerstone Housing Initiative’s Policy Guide series explores housing policy from a new perspective, studying the possible stakeholder reactions and common failures that plague policy development. Download the first three guides, each with common language about the importance of systems thinking to tackling the housing crisis.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

Secondary housing units on the same property as a primary residence.

Adaptive Reuse

Repurposing existing structures for new housing functions.

Social-Purpose REITs

Balancing investor profit with tenant affordability.

Florida Community Progress Index

Nonprofit service providers, foundations and donors, governments, and community leaders need a way to measure and track progress in the communities they serve. This is why Habitat Orlando & Osceola, in partnership with the Social Progress Imperative, created the Florida Community Progress Index™ (FCPI).

The FCPI provides a snapshot of the state of community development in Central Florida. Ranging from 0 to 100, an index value is calculated for every census tract in Central Florida and captures outcomes in housing, health, education, safety, personal rights, inclusion, etc.
