This past month, we participated in the nationwide Home Builders Blitz, partnering with eight builders to build nine homes in five days at Butler’s Preserve. During the weeklong event, builders and subcontractors came together to donate building materials, supplies and hours of labor.
While many of our homeowners and their families visited the site every day, there was one person who was completely surprised to learn about their new home.
On the last day of our blitz, Melissa brought her daughter Jazmine to the dedication ceremony and told her that they were there as volunteers. As they toured the community talking about the possibilities for their future home, Melissa placed a set of keys in Jazmine’s hands and welcomed her to their new home. Although speechless, Jazmine was all smiles as she realized all the colors, finishes and flooring that she had helped pick out for their house were now a reality.
The bond shared between the two is like no other. Melissa was previously homeless and credits her strong determination and faith for overcoming life’s obstacles. She is currently living in a re-developed hotel room that only provides a small refrigerator in the kitchen. Becoming a Habitat homeowner will allow Melissa to continue to thrive as a mother, give Jazmine the space she needs to study and provide a kitchen where they can cook and spend quality time together.
The eight participating builders of the blitz included Bellavista Building Group, Jack Jennings & Sons, Jones Homes USA, KB Home, Legacy Custom Built Homes, Park Square Homes, Pulte Homes and Walker & Company. Sponsors included PCL Construction and Rosen Hotels & Resorts.
Congratulations again to Melissa and Jazmine on their new home! View the time time lapse video from the Home Builders Blitz below!
