A note from Hannah: Celebrating 5 years in my home & continuing to grow through Habitat’s services
My dream of homeownership has always been about so much more than four walls and a roof. It was about building a sense of stability, creating new opportunities, and—most importantly—rewriting the story of what I believed was possible for my life. That journey was made possible through the mission and the education provided by Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County.

When I first started out, the road to buying a home felt daunting. I was navigating a maze of complicated language and unfamiliar steps, haunted by the fear of making a life-altering mistake. But that uncertainty began to melt away when I was introduced to Habitat’s free homeownership classes. The education I received became a bridge, turning my fear into confidence. Through workshops on everything from first-time homebuying to the fine print of closing documents, the process stopped being a source of stress and became a series of manageable steps. The classes gave me more than just information; it gave me the quiet reassurance that I was truly ready for the responsibility and the privilege of owning a home.
One of the most empowering parts of my journey was the home maintenance education. I’ll admit, I entered the program with very little knowledge of how to care for a house. Those classes didn’t just teach me practical skills; they gave me a sense of pride. I realized I wasn’t just buying a house; I was learning how to protect a legacy that would support generations to come. That knowledge brought a peace of mind that settles deep in your soul.
Owning my home provided a solid ground I had never known. For the first time, I was able to lift my head out of “survival mode” and finally ask myself: What does it look like to truly thrive? This shift led me to the Orange County Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) and my counselor, Ralph. What began as a simple request for help with student loans blossomed into one of the most transformative mentorships of my life.
Ralph offered me something far more valuable than just financial guidance; he offered a new perspective. He challenged me to stop looking at my bank account with anxiety and to start seeing money as a tool for joy and opportunity. Together, we mapped out a future that prioritizes both stability and personal fulfillment. Today, I’m learning that saving isn’t just for a rainy day or a distant retirement—it’s for living. I now invest intentionally in my health, my interests, and my community, finding joy in the things that truly make life so rewarding.
The beauty of Habitat is that support doesn’t end when you receive the keys.
Even after five years as a homeowner, I still feel the embrace of this community. Whether it’s resources on financial education, hurricane preparedness, or workshops on estate planning, they remain by my side. Their commitment goes far beyond the initial purchase; they are deeply invested in helping families like mine not just move in, but grow, sustain, and build a lasting legacy.
