In celebration of Homeownership Month, we’re sharing the impact Habitat homeownership has had on Donya and her family. When Donya bought her home five years ago, her daughter had been expelled from public school and was working on getting herself back on track at an alternative school.
Fast forward to this spring, her daughter graduated from Evans High School as a member of the National Honor Society and the track team and the vice president of chorus. Her senior year was filled with scholarship offers and college acceptance letters. “Everything she touches turns to gold,” Donya said. It’s been a total 180 from before they moved into their home, she said.
And she’s not alone. Evidence suggests that children in stable housing perform better academically due to reduced school mobility, improved mental health, and better access to learning resources. Research published in our Housing+ series shows children in stable housing:
