For more than 20 years, I’ve worked in the mortgage industry—primarily in underwriting—reviewing credit, income, and assets to help determine whether someone is truly prepared for sustainable homeownership. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work with individuals and families at every stage of their financial journey, many of whom are working toward the dream of owning a home.
What I’ve learned is that financial challenges are rarely about effort. More often, they stem from uncertainty or lack of access to clear, practical information. Credit and budgeting can feel intimidating, especially when they’re discussed without context. My passion has always been helping people understand not just what matters financially, but why it matters.
Credit tells a story over time. It reflects habits, consistency, and informed decision making—not perfection. When people understand how credit is evaluated and how everyday choices impact future opportunities, they’re better positioned to move forward with confidence.
Budgeting plays an equally important role. Rather than being restrictive, a realistic budget provides clarity and control. It helps individuals manage monthly obligations, prepare for home related expenses, and build resilience for unexpected moments. When credit and budgeting work together, they create a strong foundation for long term stability.
This focus on education closely aligns with Habitat’s mission of empowering individuals and strengthening communities. Knowledge builds confidence, confidence supports stability, and stability opens doors—to opportunity, security, and a place to call home.
FAIRWINDS Foundation’s supports of our Education and Housing Counseling programs bring that vision to life by creating essential educational opportunities in our community. Whether through free one-on-one counseling sessions or group classes, these programs help us empower Central Floridians with the knowledge they need to reach their financial and housing goals.
