Future Habitat homeowner Gloria is excited to watch step-by-step as the foundation for her family’s future rises from the ground in just a matter of weeks.
Gloria, who lives in an Orlando rental with her husband, Francisco, and their three children, will own the first home ever built in Kissimmee and Osceola County by Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County.
Their home kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 8 and will be the fifth home built by Williams Company during Habitat Orlando & Osceola’s annual Home for the Holidays event. During the event, this year taking place in both Orange and Osceola counties, the homebuilder turns empty lots into brand-new, affordable homes in a sped-up timeframe.
Gloria said the home will provide the stable foundation and sense of community her family has craved since they moved from New York to Orlando five years ago.
“This home, with its spacious open layout and large backyard, will be the perfect foundation for that vision by providing a place to gather with friends and family, pursue artistic activities, and cultivate a vibrant outdoor space for gardening and entertaining,” she said.
The couple, originally from the Dominican Republic, and their three children, ages 12, 10, and 2, are looking forward to not only having room to spread out, but also a permanent place to call home where they don’t have to worry about ever-increasing rent.
Gloria said she’s excited for the peace of mind that comes with owning her own home, knowing a landlord can’t force them out or continue to raise rents beyond what they can afford. Not having that stress, she said, will improve their health and overall wellbeing.
“Owning this property is a goal that gives me a sense of accomplishment and personal fulfillment, which can improve my self-esteem,” she said.
Gloria, who works for a local school district as a Spanish and Latinos in Action teacher, said her favorite thing about teaching is watching her students learn and grow throughout the school year. She said her students’ progress and her family both inspire her to keep pushing forward.
“My family motivates me to do better every day and to work hard so they can live a better life,” she said.
