April is National Financial Literacy Month. During this month, we encourage you to reflect on your relationship with money. In doing so, you may realize how much your upbringing influences the way you perceive and value it. Our childhood experiences greatly impact our adult behaviors, including our approach to finances.
Parents may often be reluctant to share details of household finances with their children, believing the topic is too mature or that it might burden them. However, exploring our personal feelings about money is critical to achieving financial literacy.
If we’re not careful, we can inadvertently carry the anxieties or negative attitudes about money that we learned from our parents, passing them down from generation to generation. To start changing any negative thoughts you may have about money, consider answering these three questions:
- What emotional reactions do you have when thinking or talking about money?
- Who has had the most influence on your understanding of managing money so far?
- What is the first thing you do when you earn or receive money?
Consider exploring books that promote a healthy relationship with money, such as Healing Your Relationship with Money by Kara Stevens, where she emphasizes that money should be a source of joy rather than stress. Get Good with Money by Tiffany Aliche offers a 10-step plan to achieve financial peace, security, and stability, regardless of your goals or market conditions. Additionally, Mind Your Money by Yanely Espinal provides insightful stories and practical strategies to help you reach your financial goals.
Habitat Orlando & Osceola is also here to help. If you are ready to rethink your relationship with money, consider attending our Habitat U Financial Literacy Series which covers the basics of budgeting, savings and credit.
