Charts 1 & 2 – Highlighting the Relationship Between Housing Cost Burden and Community Health

Neighborhoods with a high housing cost burden for renters have lower rates of health insurance access. Neighborhoods with a high housing cost burden for renters also have higher rates of mental health distress. Each dot on the charts below represents a neighborhood in Orange County.

Notes: Cost burdened renter households pay more than 30% or more of their monthly income to rent. The data was sourced from Census Bureau 2022 American Community Survey data. The percentage of the population with health insurance and experiencing frequent mental health distress includes all households in a neighborhood, not only renters. This data is sourced from the CDC’s PLACES dataset.
